Building a Skincare Routine for Hyperpigmentation

Dark spots, uneven skin tone, and lingering marks can be frustrating — especially when you’re using all the things and aren’t sure what’s actually helping. I’ve got good new for you…your skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective! No shade to those who love a complex routine but I prefer something more simple because that ends up being much more sustainable for me.

Whether you’re dealing with post-acne marks, sun damage, or other forms of hyperpigmentation, consistency, the right ingredients, and plenty of patience can make a difference. Let’s explore morning routines, evening routines, and some common questions and concerns.

MORNING ROUTINE

  1. Gentle Cleanser — Start with a cleanser that removes excess oil and buildup without stripping your skin barrier
  2. Antioxidant or Brightening Serum — Vitamin C is a great morning option because it provides antioxidant support while helping improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. *Other ingredients that brighten include alpha arbutin, tranexamic acid, azelaic acid, kojic acid, and niacinamide. Can add a serum with one of these ingredients after the Vit C step or mix them together*
  3. Moisturizer — Choose a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type (normal, combo, oily, dry) to keep your skin barrier healthy.
  4. Sunscreen — the most important ingredient to combat hyperpigmentation (and aging). Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and remember to reapply throughout the day.

EVENING ROUTINE

  1. Cleanser — double cleanse to remove makeup, sunscreen, oil, and the day’s buildup. Use a gentle cleanser (can be the same one used in the morning) and/or a moisturizing antioxidant cleanser.
  2. Exfoliation — this is NOT an every day step. Start with 1x per week and work up to 2x per week. Chemical exfoliants like AHAs are your best bet. Check out my post about chemical exfoliants here.
  3. Treatment — use a brightening serum or a retinoid to encourage cell regeneration. Remember that retinoids can be harsh and need to be slowly implemented. Start with 1x per week and work your way up to 3x per week if your skin will tolerate it. Never use retinoids in the morning or on the same day as an exfoliant. Learn more about retinoids here.
  4. Moisturize — Choose a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type (normal, combo, oily, dry) to keep your skin barrier healthy.

Skincare is never an overnight fix. Pigmentation takes time to improve and different types of discoloration may respond differently to certain ingredients and treatments. Constantly switching up your routine doesn’t usually get you the results your are looking for. Focus on a routine that is appropriate for your skin goals and skin type and be consistent!
